Goofball Blu came to us at the end of March 2024 at about 5 weeks old, just a little wee munchkin with a big personality. Due to his family's current situation, Blu is looking for a never-ending love story, a family that will be his ride or die.
Blu is our rescue special breed, a bit of this and a bit of that, a very athletic boy with a zest for life who will continue to flourish and mature with the right guidance.
He shows confidence in new locations and people; he will happily solicit attention and offer up his belly for a good old scratch.
Blu has an enthusiastic love of food, which makes his ongoing training a positive experience for both. He will jump through a hoop if you teach him for food, but for now, he knows the basics of sit, down, and recall (in an enclosed, safe environment).
Playing is another of his currencies; being still young with Amstaff traits, Blu’s arousal levels can escalate quickly during play. When he is shown how to play respectfully, he will bring the toy back and swap it for another. This will need to be ongoing training for Blu with a qualified, recommended trainer. This lovely lad is going to need help with being out in the big world on a lead and around distractions like other dogs. Blu has had limited interaction with other dogs, so he needs to be shown all about dog etiquette and how to approach situations calmly. Once again, we recommend that Blu continue his training with a qualified, recommended trainer.
Blu will choose to be by his person, and he calms down at your feet with a big smile on his gorgeous face. Even though he has been brought up around children, due to his size and level of excitement, he is best suited to coexist with older children.
Blu is a higher drive, intelligent, ‘worky’type, who would ideally benefit from a lot more mental and physical stimulation than it has been possible to give him recently in his current home. He needs an experienced home, as these types of dogs tend to seek ways to entertain themselves when understimulated. Without sufficient structure and boundaries, as well as appropriate outlets for their energy, they can be challenging in an average pet home. Because Blu demonstrates plenty of play drive and is fairly quick to arouse, consistent with his breed type and age, my recommendation would be that he not be homed with cats, chickens, or
other small animals.
Blu may be able to live with another dog in the home, subject to compatibility testing prior to an adoption. Blu will succeed as a pet in a knowledgeable home that is prepared and able to commit to ongoing training and exercise. He is a very likable, affectionate, fun dog who has a biddable desire to please. He could enjoy an active home with someone who would like a running or mountain biking companion, for example.
Blu is currently in Silverdale, Auckland.
Biggest thanks to Corinne Barker, Trainer and Behaviour Consultant at Dog Matters Ltd, for conducting such an in-depth assessment of Blu so we can ensure the perfect match is found.
